Preparing for an Appraisal
Why are you requesting an appraisal?
• Updating insurance on your artwork
• Have a loss or damage claim
• Donating artwork to a museum or non-profit organization
• Planning or settling a family estate
• Planning to sell or purchase an artwork
Have on hand any documents that specifically relate to the artwork such as:
• purchase receipts
• family letters or oral history
• names of family members from whom the work descended
• articles or books that refer to the artwork or artist
• any information you have gleaned from your own research online or other methods
• any other pertinent information
Photograph the work:
• take several snapshots of the front of the painting or sculpture
• close-up of the signature or any other markings if there are any
• photograph the back of the artwork
• detail of any inscriptions
